Starting February 1, 2027, YouTube changes the Partner Program (YPP), and you need to accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep earning from the affected features. Miss the date and you stay in the program, but those earnings stop until you accept. New creators also face higher entry thresholds.
Everything below comes from YouTube's own Changes to the YouTube Partner Program help page, which we read in full on November 1, 2026.
What changes in the YouTube Partner Program on February 1, 2027?
The help page covers three areas: Premium Lite, Shorts earnings, and the entry thresholds. Premium Lite expands to every country where Premium is available. Shorts earnings get a 10 million view bar for the monthly pool. New creators need more watch hours or Shorts views to join. Existing members are not affected by the new entry numbers.
What is the deadline, and what happens if you miss it?
The deadline is January 31, 2027. If you haven't accepted by then, you stop earning from the associated features starting February 1. You are not removed from YPP, and you can accept later to get access back. The page doesn't say whether earnings from the gap are paid retroactively, so don't assume they are.
You can accept some modules or all of them: Watch Page Monetization, Shorts Monetization, and the Commerce Product Module where it applies. If an MCN manages your channel and it's owned and operated by them, the MCN accepts. Affiliate channels accept for themselves.
What are the new entry thresholds for new creators?
New creators need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube's current eligibility page lists 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, so both bars double.
The lower tier is unchanged: fan funding, Creator Partnerships and YouTube Shopping stay at 500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours in the last year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days. In our read, that tier is now the realistic first goal for a small creator.
Do you need 10 million Shorts views to earn from Shorts?
To earn monthly from the Shorts Creator Pool, you need 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days. Missing it doesn't remove you from YPP or touch your long-form earnings. The page doesn't say how the bar applies to existing channels on day one, so watch your Studio notices.
That is about 111,000 views a day for 90 days. That's our arithmetic, not YouTube's. For most small channels it's far away, and we wouldn't build a business plan around the Shorts pool.
What counts as an active channel?
From February 1, 2027, a channel is active if it meets any one of these: 1,000 qualified watch hours in the past 365 days, 1 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, or two long-form videos or five Shorts uploaded every 90 days. Creators who fall below active status get an extended 90-day window to meet either of the first two. The page doesn't say when that window starts, and the upload option isn't listed for restoration.
What does this look like for a real creator?
Take an illustrative Miami food creator with 2,300 subscribers who posts three Shorts a week and one long video a month. She isn't a new applicant, so the higher entry bar doesn't hit her. She accepts the terms in Studio and stays on the monetization features. Her Shorts pool earnings don't start until she reaches 10 million views in 90 days, but the upload rule keeps her active, because five Shorts every 90 days is easy for her.
If she were applying fresh, she'd need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views. Her best move would be long-form videos that answer one question each, plus the 500 subscriber tier for fan funding and brand partnership tools.
Should you accept all the terms?
Our opinion: accept all modules the day you see the prompt, unless an MCN or manager has to do it for you. The help page FAQ says accepting doesn't affect your YPP status, and waiting only risks a gap. The one thing worth reading first is the Shorts module, because it's where the new rules live.
Our other opinion: Premium Lite pays from a pool of 60% of net subscription revenue (30% for Premium views), but the page doesn't explain how the pool is split among creators. Treat it as a bonus you can't forecast yet. A brand deal priced from your real hours will beat it. If you need a rate to start from, use our Creator Rate Calculator.
What to do this week
- Open YouTube Studio and look for the updated terms prompt. Accept Watch Page Monetization, Shorts Monetization, and Commerce if it applies.
- Write down your 365-day watch hours and 90-day Shorts views from Studio analytics, so you know which tier and which active-channel test you meet.
- If you are not in YPP yet, pick the 500 subscriber tier as your first target and plan long-form videos around it.
- If an MCN manages you, ask them in writing when they will accept for owned channels.
- Rework your first lines. Shorts that hold viewers start with a hook, and our 150 Viral Hooks guide ($14.99) gives you 150 to adapt.
- Set a calendar reminder for January 25, 2027, so the deadline never sneaks up on you.
The free 30 hooks signup is on our guides page.
