Here's a number that should reframe how you think about social: a South Florida orthodontics practice we manage has 11,000 followers. One of its reels did 5.8 million views. That's a 527x multiple on its audience, and it's not an anomaly anymore. It's how the machine works now.
Every major platform has quietly completed the same migration: from the follow graph to the interest graph. TikTok started it, Instagram surrendered to it, YouTube Shorts institutionalized it. Your content is no longer distributed to your audience. It's auditioned, post by post, in front of whoever the model predicts will care.
What this kills
It kills the lazy math the influencer industry was built on. "500K followers" as a pricing unit is now about as meaningful as a fax number. We've watched accounts with millions of followers post into a void, and accounts with four digits outperform national ad campaigns. If you're a brand still buying reach off a follower count in a media kit, you're buying a 2019 asset at 2026 prices.
What this rewards
Every post is a cold open. The algorithm doesn't grade you on who you are. It grades you on what you just made.
That's terrifying if your strategy is coasting on an audience you built years ago. It's the greatest arbitrage in marketing history if you can consistently produce content that earns attention on its own merits. The barrier isn't audience anymore. It's craft, cadence, and hooks. Which are learnable, buildable, and, unlike an audience, entirely under your control.
What we do about it
Three operational changes we've made across every account we run:
1. Price and pitch on views, not followers. When our creators pitch brands, the first slide is recent view velocity, not audience size. Brands are catching up; be early.
2. Treat every post as an audition. The first two seconds get more production attention than the last twenty. Hooks are engineered, not improvised.
3. Stop protecting the grid. Volume with taste beats perfection with hesitation. The interest graph gives every post a fresh jury, so give it more chances to say yes.
The follower count isn't coming back. Good riddance. The feed is finally a meritocracy: brutal, but honest. Build for it.
